Rising to an altitude of 3,640 meters, the hike to Phajoding Monastery is the ultimate challenge for any explorer in the capital. It is more than just a physical trek; it is a spiritual journey that takes you through thick pine forests and past ancient meditation cells. As you climb higher, the noise of the city fades away, replaced by the rhythmic sound of prayer flags snapping in the wind and the distant chime of monastery bells.
In the silence of the Himalayas, you don’t just find a path; you find a new perspective on life. The view from Phajoding makes the long climb worth every single step.
As you continue the ascent, the trail opens up to reveal stunning panoramas of the Thimphu valley stretching out far below. The path is lined with colorful prayer flags that flutter in the mountain breeze, believed to carry prayers and blessings to all sentient beings in the valley. It is common to meet friendly locals and resident monks along the way, often sharing a smile or a word of encouragement as you push toward the ancient temple complex at the summit
Elevation, Effort, and Eternal Views
The trail begins behind the Sangaygang BBS Tower and takes approximately 3 hours to reach the summit. While the incline is steep, the trail is well-marked and safe for most hikers with a moderate level of fitness. Along the way, you’ll encounter ‘Chortens’ (stupas) where you can take a rest and enjoy the expanding view of the Thimphu valley below. Once you reach the top, you are greeted by a sprawling complex of temples that have stood for over 700 years.
